The poems were created in the circle of friends around the poet W. Müller ("Wehmüller") in the Staegemann'sche Salon in Berlin's Jägerstraße. The creative young people see Giovanni Paisiello's comic opera "La molinara" in the theater at Gendarmenmarkt and decide to invent something of their own from the material. They improvise a song play, set tableaux vivantes and sing songs by the Berlin piano luminary Ludwig Berger. The acting persons next to Wilhelm Müller as "Müller Bursche" are: Hedwig Staegemann as "Rose the miller", Luise Hensel as "Gardener's boy" and Wilhelm Hensel as "Hunter". Spicy detail: Luise Hensel is being courted at the same time by Wilhelm Müller, Ludwig Berger and the great poet Clemens Brentano...

The Müller poems written in Berlin reach the composer Franz Schubert in Vienna via the paperback edition “Urania”. He is currently curing the symptoms of a suspected syphilis disease in the general hospital. In the autumn of 1823 he began to compose it, he set only 20 of Wilhelm Müller's original 25 poems to music and created a heartrending monodrama. The first 12 hiking songs by Wilhelm Müller, which form the basis of the “Winter Journey”, which was later completed, are already in the same book edition.

The year of Wilhelm Müller's death and at the same time the year in which "Winterreise" was written, the second song cycle by the two soul brothers. In two sections, Franz Schubert composed a total of 24 songs, which disturbed his circle of friends rather than inspired them and which are among the most frequently performed of all art songs today. Wilhelm Müller wrote in his diary: But take heart, there can be a like-minded soul who listens to the melody in the words and gives it back to me."

Julian Prégardien is launching the “P.RHÉI” platform with the “Winterreise” edition project
In three CD editions with the titles INSPIRATION - INTERPRETATION - IMAGINATION, the history of the performance and interpretation practice of the song cycle can be traced in an extraordinary way. The pianist Clara Schumann, the singer Julius Stockhausen, the universal artist Lotte Lehmann, the composer Hans Zender and the improvisation artist Michael Gees were the artistic sponsors and partners of the project.

The name of the platform is derived from the philosophical saying "Panta Rhei" - everything flows - and also the surname of the person who gave the idea. The reading: "perei" means "go under" in Esperanto and the English word "pray" - to ask earnestly - reveals the orientation of the platform towards deep penetration of artistic content.

In winter, Julian Prégardien goes to a hut in the Austrian mountains with the song missionary Johannes Held and together they rewrite the old song play "Rose, die Müllerin". In the beautiful month of May, the singer is in Naples for an opera production. The song enthusiast visits Giovanni Paisiello's grave, hikes to the village of La Molinara, doesn't let his hands and heart rest and decides to celebrate the 200th birthday of the composition of Franz Schubert's "Müllerin" with a multifaceted project.
